Why so many different types of concrete?
Think of concrete not as a single material, but as a bespoke recipe. Just as you wouldn’t use cake flour to bake sourdough, we vary ingredients to match specific “stresses.”
The reason for the vast variety comes down to three factors: Strength, Workability, and Environment.
- Strength:A garden path only needs to support footsteps (GEN1/C10), while a structural beam must hold tonnes of masonry (C40+).
- Workability:Some mixes are thick for “slumping” into shapes, while others are “self-leveling” to save your back during a floor pour.
- Environment:If your project faces winter frost, we add air-entrainment (microscopic bubbles) to prevent cracking. If it touches soil chemicals, we use sulfate-resisting
For your DIY project, choosing the “wrong” type usually means spending too much or watching your hard work crumble in three years.

What does C25 or C40 mean?
You will often see types of concrete called “C” something, like for example C25 or C30. The C stands for “compressive”, and the number indicates the compressive strength in Newtons per square millimeter after 28 days of curing.
