Commercial Concrete
Concrete plays a foundational role in the UK’s commercial construction sector, which includes offices, retail spaces, warehouses, logistics hubs, hotels, data centres, and mixed-use developments. As the most consumed man-made material globally, concrete provides the strength, durability, fire resistance, and thermal mass essential for modern commercial buildings. We supply both tradespeople and construction companies. In the UK, the broader concrete market supports an industry facing economic headwinds but with underlying demand from urban regeneration, e-commerce-driven logistics, and sustainability-driven retrofits.

Types and Specifications of Commercial Concrete
Commercial projects demand concrete tailored to structural performance, durability, workability, and exposure conditions. Specification primarily follows BS 8500 (complementary to BS EN 206), the UK standard for concrete. BS 8500 guides the selection of designated, designed, prescribed, or proprietary mixes and has been updated in recent years to facilitate lower-carbon options through expanded use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).
Common compressive strength classes (denoted as C followed by cylinder/cube strength in N/mm²) for commercial use include:
- C25/30 to C30/37: General structural elements such as floors, beams, and columns in offices or retail units.
- C35/45 to C40/50: Higher-strength applications including foundations, heavy-duty warehouse slabs, and elements subject to abrasion or heavy loads.
- PAV1 and PAV2: Pavement-quality mixes for external car parks, hardstandings, and loading yards, with air-entrainment in PAV2 for freeze-thaw resistance.
- GEN mixes (e.g., GEN3, ST4): Lower-strength general-purpose concrete for blinding layers, mass fill, or non-structural applications.
Specialist concretes enhance performance:
- Self-compacting concrete (SCC): Flows under its own weight, ideal for congested reinforcement in high-rise offices or complex architectural forms without vibration.
- High-strength and high-performance concrete: For long-span floors or tall structures. Generally C50-C60.
- Fibre-reinforced concrete: Improves crack control and toughness, particularly useful in industrial floors and warehouse slabs exposed to forklift traffic.
- Lightweight aggregate concrete: Reduces self-weight in multi-storey frames.
Ready-mixed concrete accounts for the majority of in-situ pours for foundations, frames, and suspended slabs. Post-tensioned slabs are common in office buildings to achieve longer spans and thinner floors, optimising lettable space. Precast concrete—produced off-site under controlled factory conditions—has gained significant traction in commercial construction. It includes beams, columns, floor units (hollowcore or solid), wall panels, and cladding. Benefits include faster erection (reducing programme time and financing costs), superior quality control, reduced waste, and lower on-site labour requirements. Precast is particularly suited to hotels, shopping centres, multi-storey car parks, and logistics facilities where speed-to-market is critical.

Commercial Concrete FAQs
We have been supplying contractors and the construction industry for decades. So we have compiled below some of the most asked questions and answers about commercial concrete.
For standard commercial pours, booking 2–5 working days ahead is usually the best option. Same day orders are accepted but are limited to availability. Larger or more complex pours, multiple-load sequences or weekend work should be booked earlier to secure plant, drivers and pump availability across London and Essex.
Mix It supply heavy-duty and high-performance concretes designed for commercial yards, loading bays, industrial units and car parks. These mixes offer increased durability, abrasion resistance and long-term performance under high traffic loads. Concrete specifcations are often higher in London areas than they are in Essex and Herts.
Yes. Early morning, evening, weekend and overnight pours can be arranged for commercial sites where programme or traffic restrictions apply. This is especially useful for retail parks, highways work and city-centre developments.
To price a commercial supply accurately, we typically need:
- Total volume (m³)
- Concrete grade or specification
- Slump or workability requirement
- Delivery location (e.g. North London, East London or Essex)
- Access details and preferred delivery time
- Any pumping or specialist requirements
Providing this upfront helps avoid delays and unexpected site issues.
All commercial concrete is produced to BS EN 206 standards with strict quality control at the batching stage. For larger pours, we can supply multiple loads from the same mix design, ensuring uniform strength, workability and finish throughout the pour.
Absolutely. Line pumps and boom pumps are available for commercial slabs, foundations, bases and awkward pours. Pumped concrete improves placement speed, reduces labour requirements and helps maintain consistent quality on large commercial pours. Ideal for sites with tight access.
Same-day or next-day deliveries are often possible, subject to availability and mix requirements. Commercial contractors working to fast-moving programmes in Essex and North London benefit from early booking and clear pour volumes to reduce delays.
Yes. We regularly deliver to restricted-access commercial sites using our expert mixer trucks and concrete pumps where required. This is particularly common on urban projects in East London and built‑up areas of North London where space and traffic management are critical.
Commercial projects typically use structural grades such as C25/30, C30/37, C35/45 and C40/50, depending on load requirements and exposure conditions. Flooring slabs, yards and warehouses often specify higher‑strength or heavy‑duty mixes, while foundations and groundworks are usually designed by an engineer. At Mix It we supply all standard and bespoke mixes across North London, East London and Essex.
