Corbets Tey School is a school for children with complex learning needs aged 4 to 19. From its site in Upminster, Essex, the school offers academic teaching in addition to language and communication programmes to assist with students’ social and moral development.
In 2017, the school’s much-loved soft play centre was no longer fit for purpose, having been repaired multiple times throughout its thirty-year life. The school initially planned to replace the soft-play centre with a like-for-like building, however, after visiting the site, we proposed a slightly more ambitious alternative.
Along with a dedicated project manager, Mix It’s Jim Taylor created plans for a two-storey extension for the school, featuring a larger soft-play room as well as two classrooms and a therapy/office space. Construction began on 25th July 2017, with the team working hard to get as much work done as possible over the summer holidays so the building site was safe and enclosed for when students returned in September.
By the end of the summer, initial plumbing and electrical works were completed, the steel framework was erected and the ground floor external walls were built. Construction of the floors, upper level and the roof was all completed in the months following, in addition to internal works and decoration.
Throughout the project, Mix It was proud to offer our services and materials completely free of charge, and we also covered the cost of labour. Additional funds for fixtures such as doors and windows, as well as the new soft-play equipment, were raised by the school’s parents and friends association and through fundraising events including charity boxing matches and a golf day.
Corbets Tey School’s brand new soft-play centre was officially opened on 16th March 2018, with the finishing touches having been carried out in the Easter holidays. Over the past two years, both the pupils and teachers at the school have been reaping the benefits of the soft play facilities and therapy space to help enhance their interactive learning and play experiences.
Here at Mix It, we are still incredibly proud to have been involved in this project and to have helped provide such an important facility for the school.
